6/27/2023 0 Comments Please look after mom book review![]() We learn pretty quickly that the mother and father had been in Seoul to visit some of their children and had become separated when trying to board the subway together, with the mother being left behind. The book commences with the line “It’s been one week since Mom went missing”. ![]() But, before I explain that, a quick overview of the plot. So, here I am again, reading about a mother!Īnd I liked it – for a number of reasons. Kyung-Sook Shin’s Please look after mom (or, mother in the British edition) has now been shortlisted for the prize. ![]() Am I right in thinking that mothers are more often the subject of novels and memoirs than fathers? Or, is it just that I’m a woman and am subconsciously (or even consciously, if I’m honest) drawn to the topic? Of course, with the Shadow Man Asian Literary Prize reviewing project I didn’t really have a choice. ![]()

Also, unless I fell asleep, my favorite Curt Cobain story was not in the book: the one where a crowd of people at a concert are screaming for "Teen Spirit" and Cobain famously says "If you wanna hear that song, ask Tori Amos. I think the author should have referred to him by 'Cobain" more than once in a while. I did not like the narration of the book because I was confused nearly every time the pronounced "Curt", but to me whenever the narrator said "Curt" it sounded like "curb", 'curd", "quirt" or any endless varieties of that name. I have been interested in reading this book for a long time since I live in Seattle, my company did work on Cobain's Lake Washington home, I saw Nirvana in concert and I attended the candlelight memorial at Seattle Center when Courtney Love read Curt's suicide note. ![]() 6/26/2023 0 Comments The hollow vows book 2![]() ![]() Unwilling to let her heart distract her, she accepts help from a band of Unseelie misfits with their own secret agenda. Jemima accepts his invitation, little realising her danger: the fox plans to kill and roast her. Jemima searches for a place away from the farm where she can hatch her eggs without human interference, and naively confides her woes to a suave fox who invites her to nest in a shed at his home. Jemima is a domestic duck of the Aylesbury breed, whose eggs are routinely confiscated by the farmer's wife because she believes Jemima to be a poor sitter. Jemima Puddle-Duck was the first of her books set wholly at the farm with background illustrations based on the farm buildings and yard, and nearby locales. Following the purchase, her works began to focus on country and village life, incorporating large casts of animal characters and sinister villains.
